Join to to learn from Dr. Stephen McCord, Senior Water Quality Engineer at Larry Walker Associates, about the mercury issues in Putah Creek.
Few realize that some of the mercury that made gold mining feasable was actually mined, in part, from mines in the Putah Creek watershed. The mercury was put into barrels and transported into the Sierras for use in mining.
McCord will help us understand the history and impact of the mines. This talk will be followed by a Watershed Wonders Tour in October for those who want to learn more, and see some of the legacy mines in person. »
The Putah Creek Cleanup will be held September 25th from 9 AM - Noon.
Please register at this link.
If you are able, please consider sponsoring the Putah Creek Cleanup!
A generous local donor has offered a $1,000 challenge. If we can raise $1,000 in Putah Creek Cleanup donations between now and September 25th, the donor will match the community contributions with an additional $1,000 donation. Please donate below (note: volunteers do not have to donate to participate). Thanks for helping us achieve this goal!
»Join us to help care for and grow native Putah Creek plants in our south Davis nursery. Volunteers will help weed, organize, transplant, and care for plants that will soon find homes along the banks of Putah Creek. The plants grown in our greenhouse and nursery are primarily used in Putah Creek restoration--creating wildlife habitat for years to come.
All volunteers must register online by clicking here. Each person must RSVP.
If you have questions about your registration, please call Libby Earthman, Director, at 530-795-3006. Questions on the day of the event should be directed to her cell phone: 530-400-8431.
Please wear comfortable shoes, clothing that can get dirty, and come ready to work with some really fantastic volunteers!

9am - 3pm
Mercury is a natural element found in the Putah Creek watershed. Form the Gold Rush era through World War II, mercury was mined from the watershed for use in gold mining. That mining legacy has left behind abandoned mine sites and contaminated waterways that even today threaten the health of humans and wildlife.
Join Dr. Stephen McCord, a local water quality engineer and Stebbins Cold Canyon Reserve guide, for a driving/ walking tour of some of Putah Creek's mercury mines.
Particpants will meet at the Winters Community Center, carpool to the sites, and enjoy a picnic lunch. Learn about local geology, mining history, and current contamination issues and cleanup efforts. Stephen is a passionate advocate for Putah Creek, and is actively working to address local mercury issues.
This is a tour you don't want to miss!
Hat, sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes, and water bottles recommended. Lunch will be provided.
»Join us for the final CreekSpeak of 2010 where Cathy Koehler & Paul Aigner, co-directors of the UC Davis McLaughlin Reserve will teach us about upper the ecology of some upper Putah Creek Tributaries.
